Alegra Motorsports,
Defending Rolex 24 GT Winner,
Qualifies 20th and 21st in GT for Rolex 24
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Jan. 25 - The two Porsche GT3 Cup cars entered by the
defending Rolex 24 GT class winner, Alegra Motorsports, will start 45th and 46th
in a 66-car field tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. when the 46th annual Rolex 24 gets
the green flag at Daytona International Speedway. The team decided to stand on
the times its cars posted during Thursday's 15-minute qualifying session
rather than forgo them to try to go faster on Friday. Most of their rivals did
the
same, preferring to concentrate on making their final preparations for
Saturday and Sunday's 24-hour enduro.
Marc Basseng of Leutenbach, Germany qualified 45th overall and 20th in the GT
class in Alegra Motorsports' No. 22 Porsche that he'll share with team owner
Carlos de Quesada of Coral Gables, Fla.; Nathan Swartzbaugh of La Habra
Heights, Calif. and Patrick Pilet of Le Chesnay, Yvelines, France. His fastest
lap
in Thursday's qualifying session was his fourth one, when he did a 1:52.194
for an average speed of 114.231 miles per hour.
Scooter Gabel of Tampa, Fla. qualified 46th overall and 20th in class in the
No. 29 Porsche. His third lap was his fastest when he took just 1:52.240 to
cover the 3.56-mile, 12-turn road course at an average speed of 114.184 mph.
His co-drivers are Louis-Philippe Dumoulin of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec; Bob
Woodman of Beaufort, S.C.; Chris Gleason of Johnstown, Pa. and Jake Rosenzweig
of
Boston, Mass.
Both Porsches are sponsored by Gatorade, TodayMD.com and Tornos.
Miscellaneous notes follow:
1. The GT-class-winning car last year was driven by de Quesada, Jean-Francois
Dumoulin (Louis-Philippe's older brother), Basseng and Gabel. It's on the
grounds here at Daytona this weekend but it's not being used in this year's
race.
2. The No. 22 is a brand-new 2008 Porsche. Its first day on any track was
Thursday. The No. 29 is a 2007 Porsche, but it's not last year's winning car.
3. Both cars are sporting glow-in-the-dark logos for their sponsors,
Gatorade, TodayMD.com and Tornos.
4. Tornos is a precision parts manufacturer. It makes all sorts of
high-quality parts used in everything from the Rolex watches the winning drivers
will
receive to the Bosch fuel injectors used in the Alegra Motorsports Porsches.
5. Although Patrick Pilet is the French Porsche Carrera Cup champion, this is
his first endurance sports car race and thus his first Rolex 24. It's Carlos
de Quesada's eighth Rolex 24, Marc Basseng's fourth Rolex 24, and Nathan
Swartzbaugh's second Rolex 24. The latter drove in both the Rolex Series and
the
ALMS last year though. All will drive No. 22 this year.
6. For car No. 29, Chris Gleason has driven in so many Rolex 24s that he's
lost count of the actual number. It's Scooter Gabel's fourth Rolex 24, and Bob
Woodman has also driven in several editions of this race. It's Louis-Philippe
Dumoulin's first year driving at the Rolex 24, although he's been on a pit
crew here in the past. Karting star Jake Rosenzweig is making his first Rolex
24
appearance. It's his first endurance sports car race ever, although he's
driven in a few sprint races.
